European Union’s Cooperation with National Army Discussed by Pavel Voicu and Peter Michalko



Chisinau, July 24, 2019 — The perspective of the defense cooperation of the Republic of Moldova with the European Union (EU) was discussed today by Minister of Defense Pavel Voicu with Head of the EU Delegation to our country, Ambassador Peter Michalko. The meeting was also attended by National Army Commander, Brig. Gen. Igor Gorgan.

The officials reviewed the defense sector’s reform, the regional situation, and the opportunities for expanding the cooperation through programs started and implemented by EU in our country.

Pavel Voicu informed the European official about the situation in the National Army, the implemented projects, and the obstacles for their accomplishment.

Minister Voicu mentioned that all the programs and agreements with partner states and international organizations aimed at modernizing the institution will continue. At the same time, new projects will be started, so that the Republic of Moldova will build its defense capacities and will have professional soldiers, trained in compliance with international standards.

The Minister of Defense added that, concurrently, the institution will focus its attention on increasing participation in international peacekeeping operations, including EU-led missions, as well as on boosting bilateral military relations with the EU states.

The EU Ambassador to Chisinau appreciated how the defense reformation is implemented and also Moldova’s interest in contributing to regional and global security by deploying National Army service members to EU-led peacekeeping and stabilization operations.

The official added that the EU is open to support the National Army and our country’s entire defense and security sector.
