The construction of the protection walls at the ammunition depots in Floresti has been completed

Chisinau December 23, 2020 — At the Base for the storage of weapons and military patrimony from Floresti the construction works of the protection walls at the ammunition depots were completed.

The targets were inspected by the Deputy Chief of the General Staff of the National Army (defense resources), Brigadier General Mihail Buclis, and the Head of the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Mission in Belarus, Djordje Drndarski.

According to Colonel Andrei Camerzan of the Logistics Directorate, the construction was based on a Memorandum of understanding (MoUs) signed between the Ministry of Defense and the ICRC in April on reducing the risks of uncontrolled explosions in ammunition storage areas and preventing chemical contamination.

Also, the works were carried out in accordance with the action plan 2020-2024 “Physical Security Stockpile Management (PSSM) of Small Arms and Light Weapons (SALW), and Conventional Ammunition (CA) in the National Army”, which aims ensuring the safety and security

of the civilian population around military objectives, by improving the conditions for storing and transporting weapons, ammunition and military assets.

The head of the ICRC Mission in Belarus said that the project would not have been possible without the commitment and support of the leadership of the Ministry of Defense of the Republic of Moldova. “The National Army has significantly improved its ammunition storage management in recent years. During the implementation of the project, we faced a lot of challenges due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Our presence in Moldova was limited, so we relied entirely on the expertise and capabilities of the National Army in terms of quality control of work performed. We are glad that our contribution will further reduce the risks and strengthen the security of the civilian population in the Republic of Moldova ”, said Djordje Drndarski.

In turn, Brigadier General Mihail Buclis appreciated the ICRC’s assistance in implementing this project. “Due to the significant contribution of the International Committee of the Red Cross, we have managed to honor our national and international commitments, including in the field of stockpile management of small arms and light weapons, as well as conventional ammunition,” said Brigadier General Buclis.

The International Committee of the Red Cross has been providing assistance to the Republic of Moldova in the field since 2013, with the National Army receiving support to improve the management and security of ammunition stocks. At the same time, the ICRC facilitated the training of Moldovan officers in the field of arms depot security and ammunition stockpile management.
