The Victims of Chernobyl Disaster Commemorated by Service Members



CHISINAU, April 26, 2021 - The National Army commemorates the victims of the catastrophe at the Chernobyl nuclear power plant, during events held in Chisinau, but also in military garrisons throughout the country.

In the capital, the current Minister of Defense, Victor Gaiciuc, together with the President of the Parliament, Zinaida Greceanii, state officials and representatives of the municipal authorities, but also veterans, laid flowers at the monument of "Stefan cel Mare si Sfant" and participated in an organized rally at the Chernobyl Victims Memorial in the Botanica sector.

During the event, Victor Gaiciuc mentioned that the Chernobyl nuclear accident went down in history through the devastating effects it had on all mankind, including the citizens of our country.

"More than 3,500 Moldovans left for Chernobyl in 1986, including those of you who are with us today. None of you shied away when you were called to take action to remove the consequences. You are certainly our heroes, a model of courage and sacrifice, including for the young generation, who know little about this tragedy, "said the acting Minister of Defense in addressing the veterans present at the event. Similar ceremonies, in a small format, took place in the Balti and Cahul garrisons, with the participation of the military and veterans from the region.

More than 3,500 citizens of the Republic of Moldova participated in the liquidation of the consequences of the Chernobyl catastrophe, including 3,000 reservists, 231 officers mobilized by military commissariats, 400 active-duty military personnel, 70 representatives of the Ministry of Interior, and 500 civilians.
