The government approved the participation of the National Army in the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon



CHISINAU, November 3, 2021 – The cabinet of Ministers today approved, during the government meeting, the draft of the Parliament`s decision on the participation of the national Army contingent in the United Nations Interim force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). This is the first UN-led operation in which the Republic of Moldova participates with a military contingent.

According to the document, drawn up by the Ministry of Defense, as of August 2022, the national Army will deploy a contingent of 20 to Lebanon, who will carry out security and defense missions, as well as patrolling in the area of responsibility.

The contingent will participate in the mission as part of the Italian contingent, as a result of good cooperation in the KFOR peacekeeping operation in Kosovo and negotiations with international missions and several partners.

The Government of the Republic of Moldova will undertake all organizational actions and will ensure the necessary conditions for participation of the national Army contingent within UNIFIL, in accordance with the provisions of Law No 219/2015 on the participation of the Republic of Moldova in international missions and operations.

In this context, the Executive will negotiate and conclude at necessity memorandums of understanding for the participation of the national Army contingent within the mission, as well as technical arrangements to assure the logistics of the national Army contingent within UNIFIL. At the same time, the Executive will decide on the period and order of rotation, the way of extending the mandate and returning to the country for each contingent, following the requirements set in the theater of operations. The number of soldiers participating will also be adjusted according to operational needs and within the limits of available resources.
The initiative for the deployment of national Army soldiers to the United Nations Interim force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) supports the objective of increasing the contribution to peace-keeping through participation in international missions, as set out in the work Program of the Government of "Moldova good times", But also in the context of the implementation of the provisions of Law no. 219/2015 regarding the participation of the Republic of Moldova in international missions and operations.

It is to be noted that so far, the national Army has participated in UN peacekeeping missions only with military observers and army staff officers. According to Security Council Resolutions 425 (1978) and 426 (1978) of 19 March 1978, UNIFIL was set up to withdraw Israeli forces from the South Lebanon, restoring international peace and security, assisting the Government of Lebanon in returning its authority to the area.
Subsequently, on the basis of other UN Security Council resolutions, the mandate of the United Nations Interim force in the Republic of Lebanon (UNIFIL) was extended for one year. At the request of the Government of Lebanon, the mandate of UNIFIL shall be renewed annually by the Security Council.
Around 10 500 troops from 45 countries in the world are participating in the UNIFIL mission.
