Tiraspol Keeps Creating Impediments

The second round of the local elections for the election of the mayor of Corjova village, Dubasari, was the key issue discussed during the Joint Control Board (JCB) meeting as of June 23. Although the elections were held in Cocieri village, Dubasari, to avoid conflicts, the representatives of Tiraspol have tried to impede the events.

Given the fact that, in the past, these elections would be traditionally held on the territory of Corjova Rehabilitation Center, the representatives of the so-called Transnistrian law enforcement structures flooded the court of this institution June 19 morning. According to their words, they wanted to prevent conflicts and mass disorder.

Thus, the members of our delegation pointed out the previous JCB decisions had been violated. Therefore, the military commander of the North and Center Sector of the Security Zone, along with military observers, control over the situation on the Rehabilitation Center. According to the members of our JCB delegation, the fact other paramilitary units are present on the territory of this center violates the JCB decisions. It also undermines the peacekeeping mission in the Eastern districts of the Republic of Moldova. Thus, they intend to worsen the situation in the Security Zone. The fact elections were held despite the existing pressure made on the population pointed out people’s and Tiraspol authorities’ opinion differ.

Ion Solonenco, JCB Deputy Chairperson on behalf of Republic of Moldova constitutional authorities, stated Republic of Moldova does not encourage the conflict, referring mainly to the case when Tiraspol representatives had used weapons against OSCE Mission.

Through JCB decision, LCT Roman Scatov was dismissed from regular expert on behalf of Russian Federation within JCB as soon as his agreement expired. He was replaced by LCT Alexandr Jmacov. JCB decided to thank LCT Scatov for his activity as JCB expert.
