Regulation on the participation of the National Army in the UNIFIL mission, approved by the Government



CHISINAU, February 16, 2022 - The Cabinet of Ministers approved today the Government Decision providing for organizational measures and conditions of participation of the National Army contingent in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL).

According to the document, the defense institution will ensure the selection of the personnel from the ranks of the professional military of the National Army, on voluntary principles, training and equipping them with weapons, military equipment, and other material goods necessary for the performance of the mission.

At the same time, the Ministry of Defense will determine the period and order of rotation, the conditions of return to the country based on international practice, and opportunities offered by partners. In this context, the Ministry will negotiate and conclude memoranda and technical arrangements to ensure the necessary logistics for the participation of the National Army contingent in UNIFIL.

The defense establishment will be able to adjust the number of participating military according to operational needs within the limits approved by Parliament. This year, our country will participate for the first time in an UN-led operation with a contingent of 20 military personnel. During the mission, the Moldovan military will operate within the area of responsibility of the Italian force headquarters.

UNIFIL was established to restore international peace and security in southern Lebanon. The UNIFIL mission involves some 10 500 troops from 45 countries around the world.
