First Moldovan soldiers left for the UNIFIL mission in Lebanon (video)

CHISINAU, August 24, 2022 — Four soldiers of the National Army were deployed on Tuesday, August 23, in the peacekeeping operation in the Republic of Lebanon — the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL). On this occasion, an official ceremony was organized in Military Camp 142.

During the event, Defense Minister Anatolie Nosatii mentioned that the officers and sergeants, who have passed a rigorous selection process, are trained in accordance with international standards, professional, and dedicated to their job.

"You are the first team of soldiers to go on the peacekeeping mission in Lebanon, a new mission for the National Army. This is why I ask you to make maximum effort in the execution of the tasks set by the command of the Italian forces and to be interoperable with the armies of the states participating in UNIFIL, representing with honor the Republic of Moldova and the National Army in this theater of operations", said the Minister of Defense.

According to the superior of the team, lieutenant colonel Igor Molodoi, in Lebanon, the peacekeepers, who will be active for six months in the headquarters of the mission, are prepared to execute all missions at the highest level.

It should be noted that in February 2023, the National Army is to deploy a contingent of 32 professional soldiers to UNIFIL.

The decision to participate in the United Nations Interim Force in Lebanon (UNIFIL) was approved by the Parliament of the Republic of Moldova in November 2021. This supports the objective of increasing the contribution to peacekeeping through participation in international missions, as set out in the Government`s program of activity, but also in the context of implementing the provisions of Law no. 219/2015 on the participation of the Republic of Moldova in international missions and operations.

UNIFIL was established for the purpose of withdrawing Israeli forces from southern Lebanon and restoring international peace and security. About 10,500 soldiers from 45 countries of the world participate in the UNIFIL mission.
