US Dentists Treat Moldovan Orphans

CHISINAU, September 07, 2011 — Three teams of American dentists, along with Moldovan experts, provide free dental care to Moldovan orphan children from Straseni Orphanage, Special School for Deaf Children from Chisinau and the Disabled Children Boarding School from Ialoveni during September 5-9.

LTCs Glenn Garland and Lilian Conner and Mr Keyahna Booker as part of North Carolina National Guard arrived to Moldova to volunteer on this dental mission.

The team effort was aided by the military doctors of the Dentistry and Maxillofacial Surgery Department of the Moldovan Army Military Hospital and the dental surgeon Simion Adam.

During this period of time, the military doctors will make nearly 150 medical investigations and provide free treatments to orphans at the National Army Military Hospital, as well as in Ialoveni and Straseni towns.

LTC Glenn Garland of the North Carolina National Guard Land Forces stated his patients are very calm. Since they have hearing problems, it is much easier to work with them, for they do not hear the noise made by the machine, thus they do not fear of that. I am very glad some children have sound teeth and the oral hygiene classes gave good results. Children attending the dentist these days will get a tooth paste and a tooth brush. At the same time, I will explain them how to take care of their teeth. I have been working in the Republic of Moldova as part of such a humanitarian project for the fourth time and I can say the experience is great".

The event is part of North Carolina-Moldova State Partnership Program and United States European Command Humanitarian Assistance Program. Such events were also held in May 2011, when the American military dentists, in partnering with the Moldovan experts, provided made nearly 100 investigations and treatments.

This humanitarian project is financed through the U.S. European Command’s Humanitarian and Civic Assistance Program and is overseen by the Office of Defense Cooperation and the Bilateral Affairs Office of the US Embassy in Chisinau.
